Mt. Everest - September 2018

Mt. Everest Trek

David and the family are going on a trek to Mt. Everest base camp.  We are taking all of September to do it.  It will take that much time, in large part, because it is 160 kilometers and, of course, the altitude.

David will attend 7th grade for a few weeks before the long hike begins. We are chronicling the adventure on a blog devoted to the Mt. Everest trek.

It is at Mt. Everest Family Expedition. The blog includes the prep work, from hiking to meds and equipment.

We will do our best to keep you updated on both the ascent and descent and, as much as we can in between, like the suspension bridges, gorges, tea houses, sherpas, (monkey) temple, and the bazaars. It should be quite the adventure.

ID Tech Again at Stanford

ID Tech

David finished another year of ID Tech at Stanford.  According to his instructor: “from day one, I’ve been impressed by your natural sense of game design and coding, both of which showed through your projects.”

David lives for these classes and can not wait until summer comes around to immerse himself in these tech classes. This is his 5th or 6th year attending ID Tech.  You can guess what he wants to be when he grows up - a CS man.

David's Cold Collides with a Gatekeeping Exam

David's Winter Cold Collides with a Socio-economically Gatekeeping Examination

David is a little under the weather. He has a cold and he just fell asleep in the middle of his bedtime story - unheard of normally that’s for sure. Usually we finish the story and he traps me in the room with a barrage of questions about life that he knows I can’t ignore, just to stay up and keep me in the room.

But I must say, he was a real trooper today. He had 3 hours of academic testing with a cold and no complaints. I am sure he did fine. He didn’t know how nervous I was prepping him with on an online test, making snacks for his break time, getting through security and then waiting for him to take his breaks and then to finish.

I know one test does not define your life, but you don’t have to be a fan of science fiction to know how society regulates our life and our entire future with gatekeeping mechanisms like tests.

All went well, but I am sure he had no idea how concerned I was over this society sorting ritual, because we just started joking about the pancakes I made this morning - but that’s another story for another time

A postscript:

We received the scores already and life is good for this little man:  91% percentile rank in Quantitative Reasoning.

In addition, as you can see from this gigantic dinner of milk, asparagus, organic chicken and apple sausage, and mac and cheese, this man is on the mend from his kid's cold.

Mini-drama subsides and life goes on.

2018 US National Figure Skating Opening Ceremony

2018 US National Figure Skating Opening Ceremony

David did it! Thousands of people watching in the stadium and he was flawless
(never mind the tv audience).

Days and nights of rehearsal and it all came together. What a valuable life's lesson. The entire team skated with beauty and grace. They were a bit nervous (so were we) until the end - but they knew they had it - bravo!

Here is the link to David Fetterman skating in the Opening Ceremony - 2018 US Figure Skating Championships in San Jose.

David's Accomplishments Compiled at the End of 2017

A Few of David's Accomplishments Compiled at the End of 2017

David has been a nonstop joy.  He has accomplished so much this year.  Aside from growing to 4' 11'' - which is amazing in itself - David has demonstrated qualities of kindness and sophistication well beyond his years.  Don't get me wrong, he is still a kid, with a lot to learn, but he is bursting with energy and a thirst for learning.  He is also a committed gamer and YouTube watcher with a pretty darn good sense of humor.

A few of his notable accomplishments this year include:

Violin

His latest violin recital for your listening pleasure.

These recitals, as you can appreciate, not only mark a passage in his life and ours, but also serve as a rich source of entertainment.  I think this is in part because of the quality of the sound and performance and in part because of the emotional bond already in place which becomes a powerful part of the experience.  Based on his performance he was invited to perform in an honors recital - basically the same thing, but even more dressed up and in a nicer venue with other musically talented kids.

Skating

David still skates before school and in figure skating competitions.  He came in second in Utah at the US Figure Skating competition.  Take a look at this tiny example of his grace in slow motion.

Karate

Both of us just received our red belts in karate this month.

Talk about a rites of passage.

It has been a great additional bonding experience.    Of course, it is a lot easier for him - he gets it right away. I have to write it down, review it, watch it, and practice, but that's ok.  I am keeping up.

There is plenty more to say, but suffice it say, he is only beginning to unfold as a person, a human being, and a son.  Keep up the good work little man!

Red Belt - A Proud Day

Karate Red Belt

It was a proud day.  After about a year of training, David and I received our red belts in karate.  It was a wonderful ceremony.  We were asked to come up to the front of the room, bow in respect, in front of the sensei/instructor, remove our old belts (brown belt one), and place them folded twice on our right side, on the floor.  Our sensei handed us our new red belts, all folded and proper, ready to snap open. Everyone in our class was sitting in front of us, making a thunderous sound, slapping their hands on the mat.

(click here or on picture to see brief YouTube video)

You can hear the thunderous sound in this tiny video above.  We shouted "break" and snapped our belts open, stood up, and waited for our sensei instructor to wrap our new belts around us.  The group stood up and bowed in our direction and then stormed over to give us a hug.

Wow - showered with a lot of love - a bit overwhelming, but you really feel you earned it.

It has been an extremely long journey, getting from white belt to red.  This last one required special attention to a 23 movement, highly stylized set of karate movements (Polgate 7).  Conceptually it was not that difficult, once you memorized the duplicative pattern, but syncing what you know with what your body wants to do is another thing all together, but we both did it.

So another bonding ritual occurred right before our eyes, while we were preoccupied with roundhouse kicks and snapping motions, like "knife hand down".  We were becoming one with the universe - if only for an hour, and then a week, a month, and in this case another year.

We train at Ernie Reyes West Coast World Martial Arts at Santa Teresa. If you are in the area, just drop on by - but you might want to give us a call first.  In the meantime, take a moment and take another moment to see this  periodic ceremonial ritual again.  By doing so you will be celebrating this special rites of passage with us.

David's Marathon Day (skating, school, karate, and violin)!

The Long Winding Day!

What a day from 5:30 am to now 11:38 (correction 12:21 am) and ready to sign off.  But before I do I just had to record this insane day.  It was a marathon to be sure.  I don't know how he does it or how I do it for that matter.

We started out around 5:30 am with breakfast.  Oatmeal, grapes, and OJ for me.  Miso soup and OJ for the little man.  (He used to have chicken noodle soup for breakfast - now it is miso.)  I also pack his lunch in the morning, typically tomatoes, organic juice, apple sauce, and fried tofu.

Fried Tofu (lunch snack)

David and I Finally Eating Breakfast

From there it is off to skating in the morning.  We make it by 7:00 am.  He is practicing for his competition later this month in Utah (US Figure Skating).

A Little Taste of his Routine on Ice in the Morning

After skating, it is time to run to school.  We must make it promptly at 8:04 or we are late.  Luckily we have not been late yet - last year or this year.

Oh but the day is not over, after school lets out, David Facetime's me and it is time to pick him up.  (I write, made my calls, and connect with colleagues via Zoom while he is in school).

David and I typically make tea for each other during the afternoon depending on who is the busiest. If I am free and he is busy with his homework I will brew it and bring it to him.  If I am videoconferencing with colleagues he will quietly slip me a fresh cup of tea.  He is a good guy.

Completing his Homework
While I Work in my Study

David often begins to work on his homework in the club while waiting for me to pick him up. He finishes his homework at home.  Interesting and accurate terminology - home work.

Practicing Violin
Without a Shirt

In addition to homework, he has to practice on his violin, since he has a recital coming up next month.  His playing has been improving with leaps and bounds.

David Gaming
Playing Against his Hero Sundee (a major gamer)

Hey the man is a gamer - from the surround sound to the Omni upgrades to get faster fps.  He loves it. He wants to be a computer programmer when he grows up. (He has made his own apps at Stanford via ID Tech.

I make him dinner before karate (which is at 6:00).  I add a glass of milk to his favorite dish and some Earl Gray tea.

David's Dinner

The man has interesting tastes - of course that is my favorite tea too.  (You may have heard that Starbucks Teavana is closing down soon. Where will we get premium tea in the future? Time will tell.)

Ok - karate time and that was exhausting, I mean a great workout.  We are both testing later in the month so we are making sure we are getting as much instruction as possible.

Post Karate Libations

After karate, it is time for a Starbucks tea, a Jamba OJ or chocolate moo, or a coffee milk shake down the road (like Van Morrison's song).

Somehow we made it through the entire day without a hitch (except we are both starting to feel it). We ran home (figuratively), so I could shower, let the dogs out, and get another bite to eat.

The little man eats well. I make sure he has plenty of veggies - asparagus cooked on the stove top using garlic, salt, pepper and a bit of olive oil (as you could see a bit earlier).

Time is of the essence. Usually we have violin lesson Saturday morning, but we ran a 5K race last weekend so Chin (David's violin instructor) was kind enough to switch our session to Tuesday at 8:00 pm.

We made it and on time.

Violin Practice

I brought Summer's violin to get it tuned. Primarily because when I try to play
Twinkle Twinkle (yes that's my level compared with David's classical music level), it doesn't sound quite right. Luckily I was correct and Chin tuned it up again.

However, in the process of asking him to tune it up, Chin encouraged David to try Summer's violin. It sounded beautiful.  Chin wants him to begin using the seriously upgrade instrument so it looks like David will be practicing on Summer's violin (hey Summer - is that ok?).

Somehow and miraculously we make it home (picking up a coffee milkshake for me and a mac and cheese for David).

Finally, it is bath time, brushing the teeth ritual, a story and bedtime.  I take care of the dogs, wash the dishes, and type this marathon memory (and a few regular emails as well.  I am letting folks know about a cool new article of mine that just came out).

Time to say good night.

Not all days are this long but many are.  I had to write this one up because it happens enough that I wanted to record it, take a snapshot.  It is a fulfilling life but does give you pause at times (especially because you have to complete a full days work in the time allotted for this busy man).

Even David asked why do we do this to ourselves.  I could not disagree - this was a rough one for both of us, but we are thankful we could juggle all these things we love.

David wanted to do the 5K on Saturday so we are thankful his teacher Chin, who was willing to give us a make-up - even if it was at 8:00 pm after a long day.

We are also thankful that we have 5 more karate classes to make sure we know what we need to know for the test.

The same goes for skating.

We are thankful we have a few more mornings to practice (even if it is very early in the morning), before his competition comes up in a few weeks in Utah.

Tomorrow is another day and it will be busy but it will resemble some sort of return to the "norm" at least in comparison to today and for that we are blissfully thankful.

Saturday Morning Violin Lesson

Saturday Morning Violin Lesson

This young man can really play! We ran (literally) to get to his Saturday morning violin lesson, but we made it and all this practice, scrambling, and lessons are really paying off.

Keep up the good work young man.

Happy Birthday Little Man!

Happy Birthday David!!!

David had a ball today celebrating his 10th birthday with a few friends.  We had balloons everywhere including a floating shark.

His buddy Henri loved the Baskin Robbins ice cream cake.

Yes the shark followed us into the kitchen.

But then we had to run off to LaserQuest.

Look who was the high scorer again!  Mr. Math - top scorer!!!

We had time for some gaming in between - boy fun for sure!

You thought I was kidding - Mr. Math - rank number 1.

After LaserQuest - you will think I am kidding but Henri played a piece on the piano and David played his violin.  No worries - they are all gamers but for a moment they immersed themselves in their music.  It was beautiful - what a way to celebrate a birthday.

We had a nice birthday with presents (including a digital printer - yes - that's what he wanted)!

Happy 10th Birthday Little Man!

Glasses, Honor Roll, Skating, Violin, Fries, and Brown Belt - Happy Thanksgiving!

Renaissance Man

This man is something else.  This week was packed, but as I reflected on it, the events of each day (and parts of each day) really capture the full flavor of this little man's existence on this earth.

Glasses

The week started with an eye examination - to everyone's surprise David needs glasses (minor correction for the computer games and maybe even for reading every so often).  He chose the glasses (and the accompanying sun glasses). He is actually a voracious reader.

New Glasses

Parent Teacher Conference

Then, it was time to run to the parent, student, teacher conference.  David presented his progress report.  He was clear and thorough.  He also has an extraordinary teacher - attuned to his development and aimed at helping him excel.  By the way, guess who made honor roll.

Honor Roll

I think I needed to put my glasses on to make sure I was reading right - just kidding.  I know he is a very bright little man.

Skating

Before school, there is of course, time for skating.  The man recently placed first at a competition in Utah - yes we flew to Utah for him - at least he remembered his routine right? Now he is getting ready to compete again (so it is more 7 am lessons for the rest of the year).

Skating in Utah

Violin

Oh yes - the man also plays violin.  He has a wonderful teacher - exacting, but kid friendly.  David was honored recently by being selected to join the San Jose Junior Symphony.

Violin Practice

Fries

Yes - in spite of this hectic schedule, there is always time for air fried french fries.  Healthy and they actually taste great.  We made them together and after the first taste he was addicted.  "Dad can you make another plate for breakfast?"  No way little man - but they do taste good.

Air Fried Fries
Karate

You get the idea - this is a real Renaissance man.  Together we practiced and practiced and practiced and last night we passed the martial arts test.  We both made it to brown belt candidacy.  I was a lot more nervous than he was - but we did it together.

Preparing for the Test

Reliving a Tiny Part of the Test

What a great way to end the week in time for Thanksgiving and trust me we are very thankful for this little man - sensitive, humble, and full of boundless energy.

Wild Turkey in Front of Our House

Wonderful to have such a happy man by our side from day to day - that is the greatest gift of all.

(If the martial arts video are not working I will put them on YouTube and create a link to them from here.)

David's Violin Recital

Violin Recital:  A Proud Moment

It was a proud moment to be sure!

David performed F. Seitz's Concerto No. 2 in G Major on Violin as part of the Russian School of Music's Recital on May 15, 2016.  The suit is from Vietnam.  We had it made for him during our visit to Vietnam - amazingly good price with a purple lining.

The performance was recorded and is available on YouTube.

To add to his accomplishments David was recently invited to join the San Jose Junior Symphony. He will  begin this summer.
